Those times are not far off when every car manufacture selling its products in India is going to release electric cars on sale. Bangalore based REVA Electric Car Company which has been manufacturing electric cars since the last seven years, is first in the block, with its recent models costing around 8,000 to 12,000 US dollars.

Since the REVA does not have an engine, it does not have any emissions, which is a strong enough motivation to buy it in these times of rising air pollution. Apart from saving petroleum costs, there are other benefits of buying a REVA:-

• The absence of an engine drastically reduces maintenance requirements.
• It can travel for about 80 kilometers on a single charge and reach speeds up to 80 kilometers per hour. These may only be slightly affected if one chooses to have air-conditioning.
• Dent proof body.

Since the time it came out with its electric car, REVA Electric Car Company has sold about 3,000 units, half of which were in Europe. Unfortunately, sales in India have not been very good. But with the Indian economy doing quite well that’s about to change soon. What’s more consumers are soon going to have more choice, with Indian car giant TATA Motors revealing its own electric car plans for the coming year.
