As far as electric car conversions go, this one takes the cake - the petrol prices touching moon have forced Essendon based IT engineer Richard Keech, to spend $32,000 on customizing his $17,000 hatchback Hyundai Getz and convert it into a fully electric car. It can travel for about 85 km after being charged for eight hours. According to the Mooney Valley Leader, Keech’s car is one of Melbourne’s first fully electric cars.
Though Mr. Keech agrees that it is not the vehicle on which he and his family could depend upon completely, that is they can only use it for local travel, long trips being a strict no-no. Furthermore the cost is steep, but for Keech it is a satisfying start nevertheless. For starters, the benefits are tempting, you save the fuel, as well the environment. You get to save a cool amount on fuel in the long run as petrol prices touch new highs with regularity, but electricity prices remain affordable and non-volatile.
According to Michael Case the chief engineer of Royal Automobile Club of Victoria, in order to put up electric cars for sale profitably, more research and improvements are needed, especially in the area of battery technology. Once that gathers speed, electric cars which are currently lagging behind hybrid cars that run on petrol as well electricity, would find there own satisfying market.
